Discussion

Although almost completely cut away by the later phases in places, it is believed that these two master numbers represent the same phase in the enclosure ditch sequence. Originally, the enclosure appears to have had its entrances in the north-west and south-east corners. By this phase, the south-eastern entrance remains, but the eastern arm of the enclosure now extends a further 5.7 metres to the north before terminating, indicating either a the creation of a further north-east entrance, or the opening out of the two square enclosures into a much larger rectilinear enclosure, with smaller subdivisions within.

As was usual for the fills in the ditch segments on the eastern arm of the enclosure, daub and charcoal flecking was noted throughout. The fill of the ditch ranged in colour from 10YR 3/2 to 10YR 4/2 in the south to a redder, more daub-rich 7.5YR 3/2 in the north. The ditch was cut into hillwash, and where the profile of the cut could be determined, it was generally a round-based V. The finds were a mixture of Roman pottery and possible Anglian material (an iron knife and a fragment of Niedermendig lava).
